Agile Class Week 9: Visual Workflows

Human beings are visual creatures. We can process pictures 60,000 times faster than reading a text. Therefore, visual information such as pictures, graphics, drawings, and info-graphics is a big relief for our brain in today’s information overload. That's why there is a visualization technique created for agile software development which is called Kanban.

Kanban is a Japanese word meaning billboard or signboard. The main principle of the Kanban system is better communication by visualization and visual management. Kanban is beneficial to lean manufacturing, because it helps avoid overloading the manufacturing system and producing too much inventory, which is one of the seven wastes in the lean production theory.

The workflow visualization tool the helps agile team to optimize the flow of their work is called a Kanban board. It is usually a big white magnetic dry wipe board. You can use any other surface on which you are prepared to draw and stick some notes. The columns are usually:
- To Do
- In process / Doing
- Done

Visualizing work is only one of the benefits of the Kanban board and Kanban system. Kanban elevates physical and virtual whiteboards from visual to-do lists to powerful workflow optimization and collaboration tools by helping you limit your work in process, see how your work flows, and gather the metrics you need to measure and improve.
