Agile Class Week 10: Agile Coach
"The best way to learn is to teach.", said Oppenheimer. I think that is the reason why learning how to be a good Agile Coach is also part of learning agile methodology. An Agile Coach is someone who helps team adapt agile by learning a new attitude and mindset, and get the past mental, emotional, and technical barriers that prevent the team from adopting an agile methodology.
Agile Coach Is A Consultant
Introducing and embracing Agile practices create friction, tension, and stress. In our class in Agile Methodology, our professor worked as our Agile Coach. As our Consultant, he asked us to create an action plan or team guide to make sure that when there are any problems or issues, we can discuss them with honesty and safety.
Agile Coach Is A Subject-Matter Expert
When we started our Agile journey, we did not know where to start. We needed someone who will take on the role of the Subject-Matter Expert. Our professor started by explaining explaining different terms used by Agile Team. After that, we began our Scrum Ceremonies while he was guiding us on what to do. With his experiences and practices, he did the work of a Scrum Master for the first three weeks. He demonstrated and explained how each Scrum Roles should work. He did not only facilitated the meeting, but also worked with the assigned Product Owner to help ready the Product Backlog, identified and helped resolve impediments.
Agile Coach Changes Behaviors
In any move toward Agile-aligned practices and principles, people and the teams that they are on will struggle with adopting new practices. They have learned through their careers how to perform and even excel in the current environment. Therefore, the learned behaviors for success can often work against team performance and Agile-aligned principles and practices. While working with performers on those teams and with leaders and managers, an Agile Coach strives to model new aligned behaviors.
Agile Coach Is A Mentor
Different than teaching, mentoring is a much more hands-on, one-on-one approach to helping someone learn. Similar to the apprenticeship model of career growth, an Agile Coach in the mentor role develops a close and trusting relationship with the individual they’re looking to help. In this role, your Agile Coach leverages their experience and expertise to help explain not just the practices associated with how their apprentice could do their new job, but also the principles behind what makes those practices personally relevant.Agile Coach Is A Leader
John Maxwell, “Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.” An Agile Leader should understands that people are people, not just resources, and that focus and motivation matter a lot more than man-hours. He also understands that people are most motivated and effective when given a problem to solve, rather than a solution to implement.
